1. Speedy with ability to get on base
2. Consistant hitter, can move runner along
3. Power with minimal KO
4. Power, sheer power
5. Some power, but RBI ability
6. If you have another power guy, but not great average, this is where he belongs.
7. Ability to keep the inning going. Some managers have called No.7 the most important spot in line up.
8. Your weak hitter, preferably with speed.
9. Out.

Thats how I ,as a manager would construct it, but everybody has a few diferent ideas. Same basic formula.

5. Enough to protect the 3 and 4 guys (this means he has to have some power so the pitchers will pitch to the other guys)
6. Some power
7. Average
8. One of your not as good hitters
9. Pitcher in the NL, but speedy in the AL, or a rookie...or a player who just sucks

the perfect lineup would be this. 1. Ichiro (hits .330 every year) 2. Jeter (Hits with people on base and almost every other situation as well) 3 Pujols (he's Pujols) 4 Arod (except for the playoffs) 5 Vlad (maybe when he hits his 500th homer he'll be respected as he should be. a better Joe Dimaggio) 6 Utley (so easily the best second baseman today) 7 Manny (in every other year besides this year) 8 Mauer (Fields, runs, hits) 9 Santana (the best pitcher in baseball)

I would rather have speed. Willie Mays as an example. Could hit a single, steal. Doubles. Some homers but the core of this team was speed.
That is what makes baseball great. The home run is nice, but a triple is the most exciting event in sports.
