The symbol is 3 diagonal slashes next to an M. The slashes are blue, then red, then pale blue.
I've usually seen it on the back of BMWs, but I'm pretty sure I've seen it on other cars too.

First correct answer gets the 10 points.

Its M power, BMWs tuning division.

Edit: It does NOT mean that the car is a M3 or M5 etc, any BMW can get M Sport extras such as Steering Wheels, Alloys, Spoilers etc. It does not mean the engine has been tuned. You can buy the badges on Ebay for 4 quid! You can order the slowest BMWs in M spec which makes them look great but not any faster unless its a M3, M5 or M6! Also some have ALPINA badges which is a private tuner that BMW approve. Similar to Irmscher on Vauxhall

Edit2: You cannot buy a M boot badge from a BMW dealer unless you own a M car!

Edit3: Bighands-if it was a M3 there would be a 3 next to the M badge!

Edit4: ALL 6 cylinder BMWs come with twin pipes standard. All M cars have 2xtwin pipes standard from the E46 model upwards (About 2000 to now)

It's an M series. They come on m3 , m5 and M series roadsters. They are usually high performance version of the 3 series , 5 series and roadsters. M3 is 333 hp.

There is no mtech engine in bmw's, they have vanos and dual vanos which serves and variable valve timing and cam timing via timing chains.

If you see that M symbol along with a "DINAN" badge, you're probably looking at a fast car.

M series also have dual exhausts as regular 3 series don't.

Defenitely a BMW Motorsports M thing. However that M with three color slashes emblem is one of the most popular parts sold at the dealer. So customers put M onto the regular BMW car. All other use of M people are just joking "Motorsports Renault Magnete" Think NOT

well boyracer answered the question perfectly. just because a car has the badge doesnt mean its a M1, M3, M5 or M6. it could be a added extra or just bought afterwards and stuck on by the owner. They are the 'In House' BMW tuners. Most manufacturers have them such as Mercedes have AMG, Nissan - Nismo, Mistubishi - Ralli Art, Subaru - STI and so on. They take normal models and make them faster, look nicer or race prepare them.

They mean that the car is one of the M series, for example, M3, M5, which is the high spec, faster BMW 3 or 5 series etc...

I think you will find that they are exclusive to BMW.

It's a BMW logo for boy racers with no style - the equivalent of go faster stripes on a clapped out ford escort.
