When the word "crackers" is applied to people, it is referring to caucasian people.

I could be wrong, but I think in some circles it's actually considered derogatory...

It is a derogatory word used to describe white southerners. It started during the time of slavery. The cracker was the person or persons who carried and used the whips.

It's meant toward a white person lower class or poor. A derogatory word to bring them down. Just like the N word for a black person.

"Cracker" is usually used by African-Americans as an insult for white people. It is very offensive! White people can use it also to describe other white people, but in this case it isn't a racial term; they're more describing the person as poor and ignorant.
