It does sound rather obnoxious though, I mean someone's asking a question and you're meant to help them out, not sound like an uppity smart alec.

Yeah. It's never happened on on of MY questions but I've seen it on others. It's cruel if you didn't actually know. I hate it when people say it to you in your daily life aswell.
