Firstly, there multiple advantages and disadvantages of having a network in your home.
For most people, there are few disadvantages. The first one I think of is that you have less security. By that, I mean that your computer becomes at least a smidgeon more vulnerable to an attack from another computer that is on the same network. If you are sharing an internet connection through a broadband device like cable or dsl, then you must make sure they are all up to date, or you decrease your security that much more. You should also not be running any outdated operating systems that are no longer supported with current security updates.
Other than this, most other things I can think of are advantages, especially if you are using broadband and wish for all your computers to share that connection. Sharing one printer instead of having to buy one for each computer that needs to be able to print is a major cost-saver.
Networks also make sharing files and folders much faster. Another beautiful thing about networks is how they are scalable. What if you have friends bring over their computers? With sufficient wiring, (a potential disadvantage unless you go with a wireless solution), they can simply plug in and share your high-speed connection as well -- along with anything else you have openly shared for that matter.
There are others, but these are the ones that jump out at me first.
Have a great day,
Riven

Some of the advantages are that you can use your Internet connection on more than one computer as long as you have a router. Another thing is that you can use it outside and around the house if you have wireless. You can also share files and folders, as well as a printer between the computers that you'll have networked.
Some of the disadvantages are that you'll probably have to buy a router in order to network the computers. Also, if you have a wireless network without a password on it, your neighbors or people driving by or something may be able to get on your network and view files and folders.

Advantages:
Convenient
Share files if necessary
Share printers
Access from any location (if wireless LAN)
Multiple computers have access simultaneously
Disadvantages:
You are sharing the bandwidth between multiple systems. So if your one of your immediate family or room mates is a bandwidth hog you will suffer for it.
You now have to be a bit more security conscious.
