It's occurred to me that some people on this site believe that homosexuals have only just started appearing, and that somehow this means that either they were not "created by God" or that people are just following a "trend".
For those people who say things like "There were hardly any gays like 30 years ago" and think it means something, you couldn't be more wrong. The fact is that there were no openly gay people back then, but there were gay people. Homosexuality has existed just as long as heterosexuality, as documented in nature and in our own history.
Seeing as I do not believe in God, I can agree that gays are not created by God as nobody is, but the idea that people are gay as a "trend" or to be cool is ridiculous. Do you really think people would be willing to have same-sex sex just to be cool? If anything, it would make them less liked within our own prejudiced society.
Sorry to rant but this has really been pissing me off.

Sorry, I know it's not exactly a question, but reading some of the answers people have been giving on this site it seems like this is a common misconception. It just annoys me when people say that gays are just doing it to get attention or some crap like that.

There have been homosexuals since time immemorial, whether or not people want to recognize them. 30 years? My marriage is going on 27 years in October. Lets try 50. Madame Rose P.'s would have been going on 43 years and there are some relationships that are much older.
Let's look at history : never mind the Greco Romans, but Oscar Wilde, a lovely author and poet; Richard the Lionhearted; Alexander the Great (okay, he's Greco-Roman) but you just can't away from it. If we were to remove the people who were gay from society we would be removing a great deal of artists and lawyers and theologians (oh yes!) and many more that have and are contributing to society. If you don't like it, fine, either don't look or turn your other cheek as your Savior would have done (who, by the way said NOTHING about homosexuality). We're already firmly ensconced in Society as a whole and for the most part, Society can't tell the Gays from the Straights. Bless us All.

I agree. Being gay is nothing new, but understanding that it is okay and normal is. I'm sure at the beginning of time and not that long ago people were embarassed to be having feelings for the same-sex. If society had just accepted homosexuality from the beginning, there wouldn't be any discrimination today, gay people wouldn't be marrying individuals of the opposite sex, and they wouldn't be lying to themselves. If people back then had realized that it is simply a part of nature, like many of us realize today, things would be a lot different.

homosexuality has been around for a VERY long time. The most popular reference being to ancient Greece. You know Fraternities and Sororities today? Yeah back then they were groups of intellectuals that considered homosexuality, "benediction" amongst its members. With the emergence of monotheisism, homosexuality was shunned up until the late 1950s. It is not a matter of homosexuality reemerging but rather people are starting to tolerate it once again.
I would not go as far as to say, "being gay is 'cool' or a 'trend' ". It is what it is.

Anyone who thinks that would be very naive. I mean come on now.....but the word gay as a definition for a homosexual is fairly recent. When I was a little girl the only thing gay meant was a person who was very happy.

People think that "gay" is a trend, because we are not staying in closets with our "shame" anymore. We are starting to understand that we don't have to hide who we are, just because others don't agree with it. One or more disagreement doesn't make it go away. We are teachers, lawyers, doctors, police officers, chefs, writers....we are your neighbors, your fellow church members, your coworkers....if you think being gay is sick, then you probably aren't gay, so don't worry about what gay people do.

To the poster that spoke so intelligently on "straight pride", we as a community, went years of being shunned, being beat up, being discriminated, so if we can take a day, a weekend or whatever to celebrate our pride in who we are, then how is that a problem. If you don't like, don't attend. Do you complain as heavily about St. Patricks Day Parade, MLK Day Parade, Thanksgiving Parade (speaking of, how many people out of the group of people at the Macy's parade are actually Pilgrims and/or Indians)

Even the Bible supposedly says homosexuality is bad. The Bible may be BS, but why would it condemn something that didn't exist yet? I don't think anybody acually thinks homosexuality is a recent thing, anyway.

It's nothing new, you're right. There are folks who really don't know that much about what goes on out there, in the real world, and then there are individuals who make really weird stuff up to get everyone worked up because they think it's fun.

But, I do think there are people out there who think it's a choice and all that, who decide they want to try being gay, kind of like the rude people who show up at ethnic festivals who aren't that at all, but insist they are more that than you can possibly be, and they make themselves so visible, so out and proud you can't believe it, (even though they're purely out and proud only about themselves) and then they get tired, bored, disillusioned and skulk off to rant about it. I didn't make any sense, did I?

Anyhoo, I feel for you.

I'd have to agree with you. some people think it's some "new" fad to be gay. and like to claim there "weren't any homosexuals" around when they were younger. we've been around as long as there have been humans. but, because of bigots, discrimination and abuse, many of us were hiding in the closet. Now that more people are coming to their senses and become more accepting, more of us are comfortable being out.
