With the ever increasing size of China's military and the constant upgrades and money being fed into it, it is only a matter of time before they are stronger and more powerful than the USA. They have far more people and more and more are being enrolled in the military. My question to all American's is this:

Should America allow China to continue it's growth and rise in power or should we do something to prevent them from becoming the super power before it's too late so we can continue to retain that title and be the supreme country?

All these replies make me sad in my heart. What happened to American pride? What happened to wanting to be the best and be #1 ? If you don't think other countries want to be #1 you are insane. I am not worried about India, they can't even provide their whole country w/ plumbing and electricity lol. My heart is sad.

We should do something. China is a threat and we can't ignore it anymore. Is a communist nation that doesn't support our democracy beliefs and I think the U.S. should be ready to try anything against China.

when dealing with China military might is not an issue, each has the hydrogen bomb, ICBM's, and ballistic missile subs, therefore no war between them will occur, and if it does, you won't live long enough to realize it is happening. China has been militarily isolated for the last 50 years, so possibly vietnam type conflicts started by us could occur, but i doubt it.
I don't see a new cold war with china happening any time soon, we are just too dependent on them.

any thing we would do to prevent them from becoming a super power would hurt us just as much or more.

Unfortunately for China, a higher amount of people in the army doesn't mean more powerful. Technologically, the USA is far ahead of the game. We don't have a say in what goes on in China, and if you don't wish the support China, then simply don't buy any products made there.

Your question assumes we have the final say in the matter of what China does or does not do. Nixon opened relations with China and signed the first trade pacts with them, not Clinton. It is only in the last decade that they have become the economic giant they are now. Although I believe they need to seriously overhaul their human rights agendas, I am also aware that Americans complaining about their military buildup is the pot calling the kettle black. Take the mote out of your own eye before you complain about the splinter in your neighbors'. China has many issues it needs to deal with, and I do not believe in communism, but that issue is in Chinese hands, where it belongs.

You want facts? Take a look at the military expenditures by nation, below. Guess who is number one?:

You'd better "HEAR THE HEATHEN"

Good analysis, Heathen, and you're correct in bringing attention to "The OTHER" eminent Superpower, India. While we have busied ourselves fighting legitimate and questionable WARS and WARS ON (fill-in-the-blank), the Indian economic behemoth has only been quietly growing and flexing muscle.

To those who trumpet our technological superiority, you must remember that technology is NOTHING MORE THAN another commodity. It too, is merely a "product" to be bought and sold. BIG money can buy BIG TOYS...and smart people.

If Iraq teaches us nothing more, the analogy of General George S. Patton augmented by a present day warrior, General Colin Powell, must never AGAIN be ignored:

"Boots on the ground can't be simulated by a computer program. Technology can bring large body counts, but it is of little use when it comes to keeping and establishing the peace necessary to facilitate regime and philosophical changes."
-Gen. Colin Powell-

Supremacy is not self-earned or self-imposed, it needs to be recognised by and acceptable to all~! China has survived many trials and tribulations in its existence as a sovereign republic since 1949. The opening up and the spectacular growth in the last 30 years or so should inevitably be accepted by others whether one likes it or not. In its unending finger pointing at China under one pretext or the other, America is only exposing its weakness! Come 2050, America will no longer be a country with its present self-proclaimed status!

China has only grown due to it's recent acceptance of limited capitalism. It will spread like cockroaches and the Chinese Government will be forced into capitalism by it's own enormous population. their leaders know this and will avoid complete revolt through the slow conversion to pure capitalism.
Their leaders will walk away rich and not criminally responsible and their people will be free.
It all stared after the people of China voiced their opinions in Tienanmen Square.
the Chinese government saw into the future and understood they would eventually loose control now that the rest of the world is watching.

Practically, we can not stop China's growth, so it would be wise to support activities which will sustain the dominant power of the US. Make no mistake, there will always be a dominantly powerful force in the world. Detractors can say what they will, but there is no another country in the world that could be a better steward of dominant force. If any country surpasses the US, the world will suffer because of it.

China has several times the population of the US and worrying about what they will or won’t become is unproductive. We should concentrate on making our own country as good as it can be.

Borrowing from China in order to finance very expensive and unnecessary wars is short-sighted. Ignoring the health needs of our own population is absurd. Continuing to ignore the loss of American jobs through offshore outsourcing is counter-productive. Ignoring accountability in our elected officials sows the seeds for our deterioration.

If we wish to maintain a leadership role then we have to function as a leadership model.

China is not--nor likely to become--a threat to the USA. In the first place, that is not an expansionist culture, and inthe second place, they can't equal us technologically--and have zero chance of doing so.

What we don't need is more of the paranoia, bigotry, and intolerance of the right wing who are looking for an excuse for their own failures. That kind of delusional thinking plagued us during the Cold war, and since. It is these incompetan t fools who got us into Vietnam--andinto Iraq--with their psychotic yammering about not "allowing" countries to grow because they see any growth on another's part as a threat.

Before they become one... Realistically, they are.

But I don't think our objective is to be known as the "supreme country". Keep our hands off... relations are pretty good and we have no reason to believe they wish to start an all out takeover of the US. Right now, that seems a little silly.
