It goes along with why we have all these stupid warning signs on the products we buy, like "Don't direct compressed air into your eye." They're there because some dumb a$s did it and sued the company. The bad part is these dumb a$$es get paid out of court a lot of times because companies can't afford the lawsuits.
As for those vidoe game idiots, there isn't a punishment that would fit the damage they did to their children. Isn't there any kind of parental caring instinct with these people?
I can't eat in front of my kids without offering them something too. We fix their meals before we fix our own.

I personally think that the use of Computer or Video games as an excuse for anything (violence, negligence, etc.) is downright bullsh--er, downright stupid. Sure, there are some people who actually are addicted to a game or a program, but then there are others who just use it to pass time on overly hot, or on blah days, and generally lead normal lives outside of that, going to work, to school, hanging with friends, etc. It shouldn't be looked at as a problem. Biggest example, and I know no one wants to hear this: Columbine. The first thing that most people said was that the kids did it because they played games like GTA and Counterstrike. Then after a while, it was shown that they never had any exposure to violent games, and that their motivation was purely that of a social basis. Various other crimes in the years since then have had Video Games as an almost immediate excuse for the violence or rashness, and while sure, maybe a few really were, those cases were ones where the person couldn't tell the difference between reality and fantasy to begin with, and could potentially have been triggered by something seen on the news. But, at least for the moment, using Video Games as an excuse for peoples' actions will be commonplace for this society until we find the next big technological thing that someone will start complaining about. I can just see it now: "I don't think he'd try to do that if he didn't decide to play with his RoBoyX4000 all day long!"

To say this is mental illness`is to say a bump on the head is a brain tumor. I don't think so. Mental illness is a disease that robs many people of a happy and productive life and has been overlooked for years. Conduct that you mention is just plain evil,in the same class as the group of teenagers in a Flordia ghetto housing project, raped and sodimized a woman while her twelve year old son was made to watch, then to make the mother give her 12yr.old son oral sex. Evil individuals thinking of their own immediate gratification. Definately not mental illness.Punishment for the so called parents playing video games--- I like your suggestion best. The poor little teenage boys who also will probaly not be held accountable for their actions either, or at least I am sure it will not be in relation to the heinous crime committed, should have their sex ual organs cut out and spend the rest of their lives either in prison or on some island that consists of beautiful women with baseball bats and luxuary accomations for the women only. The teenagers must live outside the best they can. The mother and son should have the option of being their also to watch the daily torment and beatings.

Well, we all know that computers can be addictive but to use that as an excuse for neglecting your children is just disgusting. The children should always come first.
The chances are that these people would have found something else to fixate on if it hadn't been the video games. Obviously the children were not important to them - I hope the kids go somewhere they will be brought up with love and that they never go back to these people.
Mental illness is too often used to explain away bad behaviours, it seems to be the modern answer to everything.
Stupidity and selfishness is not a mental illness.
And yes - they should be rendered physically sterile.

I think that this whole video game addition as a mental illness is an insult to people with real mental illnesses.
People with real mental illnesses (bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, OCD, et al) don't choose to have them. They are born with them or develop them and have very hard lives due to medication, misdiagnoses and, especially stigma from society. Part of this stigma involves people telling the mentally ill to have more "willpower." Willpower cannot keep an OCD from counting tiles, a bipolar from having a mood swing or a schizophrenic from hallucinating. Willpower can keep a person away from a cigarette, a six-pack of beer, crack and video games. Everyone knows this and when addictions are added to the list of mental disorders, most people assume that ALL mental disorders involve a lack of willpower. This is why truly mentally ill people often don't seek help.
Addictions are chosen behavior patterns. People say, "Oh, I'm addicted to crack/alcohol/cigarettes/video games/etc. I'm mentally ill." No, sorry, dude. You consume too much of something and it has negative effects on your behavior patterns. END OF STORY. Don't want to be addicted? Then freakin' quit it. It's that simple.
There's another group of people that are going to be hurt if they add video game addiction as a valid mental disorder: responsible gamers. I am a gamer. I love video games. I am also an avid D&D fan. But when someone I love needs something from me, I quit out of the game and do what I'm supposed to do. Gamers suffer quite a bit of stigma as well. We're seen as nerds, people who will never marry, failures in society. It isn't true. Irresponsible people like these two add to the stigma. If the psychiatric community recognizes video game addiction as a valid disorder, all gamers will bear the brunt.
Those poor babies. I read the article. A 10-lb 11 month old. Hair matted with cat urine. Genital infections on the boy. That's the stuff of nightmares. Those poor little kids:( Their parents should be shot.

By the way I didn't see the question. My advice is don't worry about it. And all stop reporting each other unless it's because there is some sort of Child danger thing going on. This is a question and answer site not a war zone. Although you can give me the points if you like :) I'm not that gown up at 44 that I don't desire the occasional point.

I think this is one of the major reasons for the decline of America, people don't take responsibilities for their own actions. If you have no personal pride, and can make money by suing someone else for something that is you're fault, why not? Or try to get away with a crime by blaming someone else. I know it's completely unamerican but I always thought you should prove you could be a good parent before you're allowed to have children, it would make make the world a much better place if it could be done.

My opinion is that the courts need to get tough with people like this; I personally believe in "an eye for an eye." They should be put in a house with people watching TV and eating and not letting them eat ... starve them to death! Meanwhile people who are REALLY mentally ill suffer consequences of acts they could not control. It's a sad state of affairs; getting worse and worse every day ...

Well, if they think that those video games are inappropriate, then why do they even let thier children play them?? It's not even the video games, it's the parents. They should have responsibility for their kids. My parents are strict, if they don't like a type of video game i play or music i listen to, then they don't let me. Then again, i am the daughter of Panamanian immigrants, an as latinos, they know how to discipline their kids.

It's the American way to blame everybody else for your problems.Remember the parents who sued Judas Priest because the lyrics to their songs made their son go nuts and kill somebody ?
