All service providers like eBay, Yahoo etc own the servers which support the email systems and this means that they have access to all communication.

So to answer your question - Yes they can read your emails.

They will not do it, since that will be illegal as it is akin to mail tampering but if there is a compliant from a seller (recipient) they are obliged to retrieve your communication and investigate. They can also be called upon to provide the contents of your mailbox in case of any legal issues where you involved.

As advised, make sure you exercise caution when exchanging any communication in the public space if you are concerned about your privacy. Keep your thoughts and words private.
