Here in Durham there is a grocer called Food World. . Usually my sister goes with me but yesterday my husband did. This is the most culturally diverse place that I have seen in a long time. Hispanic, Arabian, African, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc. We were looking at the Italian gold, an Asian man grabbed my husband's arm and was trying to show him something. We could not understand, he drew a small audience of people. He had a scratch off lottery ticket saying that he had won $5,000. People of different cultures hugged each other, and for 10 or more minutes, it was like nobody was a stranger. My eyes caught on the white shoppers and they were standing back. A older white couple came up. As soon as others say them, they made a point to exclude them. Nobody acknowledged them. My mouth dropped, I could not believe it. I did attempt to include them in. I found out really quick that I stood alone. What do you think of this?

Intelligent analysis please.

This is the first time that I noticed that racism has started to shift. I have always seen it covertly but never so openly.

$0.02 in NC, the lottery is basically a new thing. It has not even been in operation for a year yet. I think that his reaction is what drew the crowd. You would think that he had won ten milllion dollars. He was very loud, shouting in a foreign language, he was pulling on my husband and grabbing him. lol. He was too cute.

Believe me, it happens much more than what you might notice. There is a great deal of racism among all people. Of course, I am NOT claiming that it's equal or equally felt.

I think much depends upon the attitudes and norms in different states and localities. For example- It seems to me that there is a lot of racism towards people of all races in the locality that I live in. But there are two localities nearby in which this is not the case (according to my observation). In one city, I've observed more racism directed towards whites. And, in the other city, I've observed more racism directed towards blacks.

I agree with $0.02 in that it's definitely commendable that you attempted to include the white couple. There are so many people who are only concerned with racism that's directed towards their own race. It's good to know that there are people like you who care about EVERYONE. Thank you for being such a wonderful person. ☺

I dont get it. Why was everybody happy that he one 5000? thats not enough for him to share.

anyway, you are to be commended for at least trying to be inclusive. Did somebody spit onthe White couple? they'll be alright.

edit: my bad, you said intelligent.

well .... I suppose, when in a multicultural setting, especially an international one, that there will be occasions when the white folk will get left out. because it seems almost every culture, at some point, has had there developement negitively impacted by white people. For that, there is a lot of mistrust floating around.

That's right! I remember my family used to drive up here just to play the lottery (Im in VA)

Racism isn't only a white persons problem. Most cultures have a inbred(taught) dislike for other races to some extent.
