If the service is Sterling silver it will carry the assay mark which should show the letters SS or if it shows EPNS it is electroplated Nickle Silver

If you go to your local library you can find books on the type of assay marks which will tell you when it was made

If there is a number 92 that is the silver content and 8 is the nickel content. 92 is sterling silver.

Actually, my fiancee gave me a CZ 10k white gold ring last Christmas for a promise ring.. It was about $60 and still gorgeous!! I wore it all the time, until I got my engagement ring. Wal-Mart had a wide variety... They have come a long way, let me tell you!! Check it out... You may be surprised and find something you love... I love my promise ring.. And even though it was CZ, it still sparkled... Another option, have you thought about a swaroski crystal ring? Swaroski crystals sparkle just as much as a diamond sometimes!! Check out your local craft fairs, or if you have a swaroski crystal store.. I know they have one here in Chicago, IL in Woodfield Mall..
