I was asked to find 5 different people to identify what crime was committed in each of the following situations. I thought a good way would be to ask the question in this form. Thanks in advance for all constructive input.

1) While passing Juan's house one night, Sarah sees a portable tv set left unattended on Juan's lawn. Sarah takes the tv set, carries it home and tells everyone she owns it.

2) While passing Juan's house one night, Sarah sees Juan outside with a portable tv set. Holding Juan at gunpoint, Sarah forces him to give up the tv set and then runs away with it.

3) While passing Juan's house one night, Sarah sees a portable tv set in a window. Sarah breaks the front-door lock, enters, and leaves with the set.

Typically the crime of theft is broken down into the classifications of larceny, embezzlement, theft under false pretenses, receiving stolen property, robbery, and extortion.

So the first scenario would probably be petty larceny, unless that was a REALLY expensive portable TV. Scenario 2 is armed robbery, and scenario 3 is breaking and entering plus petty larceny.

theft, armed robbery, burglary. Theft is the least severe. Someone who would hold a weapon to you or break into a dwelling is a dangerous individual, a petty thief is just a stupid and dishonest person looking to make a quick buck at someone else's expense.

They are slightely different: In the first case, the TV set is unattended in the lawn. In the third case, it also involves braking the front door lock, while in the seccond case it involves pointing a gun towards someone.
