Your inspiration. Look at what's happening in your life right now. Write about it. Pour out your emotions. People will relate and connect with the song.

There is no secret, everyone has it in them to be a good poet/songwriter you just need to realise what you are passionate about. I write songs about my opinions and the way I am looking at the state of the world. Think about what makes you tick and do some freelance writing about it. Write whatever comes into your head, dont worry about rhyming or phrasing. Sooner or later you will start to concentrate one a particular thing and will write about it alot. Then its a case of choosing the parts you like and replacing a word here and there to help it rhyme. Thats what I do anyway. Good luck!

Know a lot of words. Knowing a lot of words is a great thing, especially deep words that can express something. You can become a successful songwriter if you write from your heart about your life experiences. I mean that's the best you can do. Start by writing poems for example and just compare them and see if you can change things about it. Practice a lot.

I find that i do all my best work when I am experienceing an extreme emotion, either happy, or deppressed. Me and my fiance of a year just broke up... and I grabed my guitar and my keyboard... and away i went. It also helps if you have some poetic side. Listen to alot of music, get inspired.

being able to create a series or lyrics which go with the music...

i do this all the time, our guitarist plays a few riffs, daughter throws some rythm in. and i just make it up as we go along...

then we record it, or we forget it... on an average friday night jam, we probably do around 5 new songs...

maybe they aint classics... but we have a damn good time doing it...

Don’t spit in my eye babe
It’ll make you cry
Don’t spit in my eye babe
Without telling me why

Don’t spit in my eye babe
Don’t ask why
Don’t spit in my eye babe
Don’t make me lie

Don’t spit in my eye babe
You wont like the truth
Don’t spit in my eye babe
When you have no proof

my songbook has hundreds and hundreds of pages, but theyre just scribbles, word sequences, rhyming couplets,

baby, just tell me what to do
oh baby, you know i havent got a clue
oh baby please tell me what to do
baby, you know i havent got a clue

oh c'mon baby show me like you do

and thats just 12bar blues... you can shrink it, or stretch it, when i sing it, i extend the babeeeeeeeee, and squash jus tell me what to do.. and make it fit with whatever they rest of the band are playing... and so long as you hit the changes, and match the rhyth with your cadence... well, its only rock n roll, but i like it.... like it, yes i do..... (stones)

oh, and always keep your scribblings.... its great for a reference.
