extra detail based on the answer below. the internet is working fine on both computers apart from tcp. it's all enabled ect. i have set norton to allow tcp and udp. this has not changed the matter. i also tried on one computer at a time though just the virgin hub without any luck. the sweex router does have a built in firewall but i cant seems to find anything about how to turn it off/on. what else is left for me to try?

Several possibilities here:

First the main reason for a router over a hub
would be the FIREWALL in the router

A hub provides all the combining features
of a router but has no Firewall in it.

So the first best guess would be if neither
computer has TCP/IP protocol avail (internet)
IS the modem Internet light LIT UP?
if it is and neither of the 2 computers are connecting
will hooking one up direct to the modem allow it
to connect ?

The modem has several status lights usually 4
one is to tell you if a NETWORK connection
to the PC is detected another tells you if the Modem
has a connection to the ISP server the first one
usually indicates its ON and the last one indicates
that the PC has created an Internet connection
thru the modem.

Most likely you will find Hooking up just 1 PC to modem
directly will allow it to work. You should verify this with both
PC's making sure to use each ones CABLES to verify
a cable isn't causing the problem.

After you verify both PC's can work without the router inline.
Try hooking up just 1 PC to the router and see if just 1 PC
not 2 can work thru the router. IF not the router internal
firewall is the problem.
You can use http://www.portforward.com to learn how
to forward ports to your router
Or you can replace the router with a standard HUB
and rely on the PC's software firewalls to protect them.

ALSO you need to contact your ISP inorder for 2 PC's to share a MODEM you need 2 IP addresses from your ISP
just having 1 IP isn't going to work DHCP wont be able to assign a valid IP for 1 of them.

Is the router issuing correct IP addresses (DHCP range) ?

Try setting up the IP addresses manually (i.e remove the 'Obtain IP addrerss automatically' option).
