I never make definite passes until I'm sure that she's gay, but until then, I flirt my *** off. If I realize that she's straight in the middle of flirting, I simply back off a little, but keep up the flirting as if that's just the way I talk to people.

Happens all the time. With people of the opposite sex, even.
Gays don't have an exclusive deal with humiliating rejection.
At least You can play it off as "he/she isn't gay..." when you are rejected.
We have to pretend that she's rejecting us because she IS gay in order to save our dignity...
