No, football has definitely passed up baseball as the number one sport in America, and as a huge baseball fan, I don't like it.
There are many reasons why this is the case, and a lot of it has to do with how baseball markets itself, and how late their playoff and World Series games are televised. They start many postseason games at 8:15 eastern time, and many games can go 3+ hours, so a lot of children never get to see these games, and this has been going on for 10-15 years now, so it's like baseball has left an entire generation behind.
Baseball also promotes the nostalgic aspect of the sport so much, that it seems like it only caters to the 40-60 year old demographic that they already have. They need to promote today's players (which can be tricky with the steroid scandals) instead of living in the past with Mantle, Aaron, Mays, etc. They need to capture the younger crowd's interest more.
Finally, football, along with other sports is faster and more action packed to the average guy, especially the younger generation, so that's another reason. I still say football wouldn't be nearly as popular if you take out the gambling (whether it's betting point spreads or the weekend pick-em contest at the office) and the fantasy aspects to it, but as it is, it has left baseball in the dust.

Baseball hasn't been # 1 for a while, but football is all glitz and buzz, and while college and local highschool football will always be popular, the NFL is beginning to fade a little. BUT -- the NBA and college basketball are big because it's a sport that anyone can play with a ball of some sort and a basket of any kind. Baseball used to be that way, but times have changed and pick up games and neighborhood kids getting together just don't happen like they used to.
Baseball will always be the best with many people, though. Me, for instance.

For me football is #1. I'm so sick of baseball and it's steroid issues along with Barry Bonds. I am an avid Cardinal fan but this year I doubt they ever break .500.

Football is the #1 sport now. And they basically went ahead of baseball as the top sport right when the latter had that strike and cancelled the World Series in 1994. While the baseball players and owners were arguing over issues, the fans went to football and watched those games instead. It took many years for baseball to recover from that work stoppage. And the NFL really took off business-wise ever since.

I think Football has passes it. Football games almost always have a sellout crowd each and every game. Baseball doesn't. But it's still a fun time going to the ballpark.

Baseball used to be the national pastime (aka: America's favorite sport) but there is no denying that the NFL is now king.
America is football crazy.

Baseball is Americas most traditional sport.
More people go to a ballgame then a football game every year.
Besides, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Babe Ruth, are more household names then Payton Manning, Joe Montana, and Tom Brady.

I think you can make a case that football and even NASCAR have passed baseball. However, I still think that for day to day interest, baseball is still number one. Football and NASCAR only grab most folks during the weekend, whil baseball is an everyday thing (check them boxscores everyday, at least the one involving my team or favorite players). So, I think football is the number one fall to winter sport in this country, but baseball is still number one in the summer. Let's enjoy them both.
