You can advertise in your local newspaper .. this tends to hit a reasonable amount of public ...
Leaflet dropping is the better option as you can gain a lot of customers that way....
You could also ask the local newsagent if he would be prepared to put your leaflets in his newspaper deliveries for a free cut.....
Word of mouth will be your best advertising .... you could try also popping into mums and tots .. handing out leaflets at local schools ...

On Myspace you can browse people in your local area so I would start there. , The elderly like mobile hairdressers so visit old peoples home. luncheon clubs bingo halls with you cards.. Get CRB checked if you are going to be working in peoples homes.
Advertise in a local bridal shop they normally have directories of services for brides. Make up a folder of brides styles and take them to a bridle fair. Your local hotel that has a banqueting suite will normally have directories too.
A;ways have you hairdressing portfolio
with you or at least your card with an web address like Myspace or Frappr which you can upload you gallery to
Also do some blogs search engines pick this up first

I would have a poster ad done and advertise on the side or back of a public transportation vehicle or vehicles. It should be relatively inexpensive get you great visibility and since your mobile the ability to reach customers from any area that saw it would have to be a win win situation. gl

Have you tried advertising online?
It would help to boost your client numbers.
Hope that helps.
