All soundcards, graphics cards and other hardware on a computer require "device" drivers or software to operate properly. When you installed XP as new your soundcard doesn't have the particular driver installed in the "new" Windows to run. You probably have the original CD which contains the necessary files. If you have, try installing the necessary files from it. If not, you'll have to download them from the manufacturer's website. This goes for your graphics card too.

One way to make sure the drivers install properly is to physically remove the sound card from its slot on the PC. Reboot, shut it down and then replace it in an adjacent slot. When it reboots, XP should pick it up as new hardware and you can reinstall the necessary drivers. Do the same for your graphics card.

Hope that helps.

After a new installation of any OS such as Win XP, you must install next the motherboard chipset driver and the drivers of all onboard devices (LAN, VGA, Sound, etc.). Next should be drivers of devices that are on the PCI slots, graphics slot and USB ports. Then you an install your favorite softwares. Worked for me flawlessly in my laptops and desktops.

Find and install it's drivers. Each MFG has a download page of supported software.
Google the maker's name and model number of your card and download it's driver software.
You might have the disks?
