Period pain should be uncomfortable and not the way you are describing it. The reason why we feel discomfort during this time of the month is a couple of things : the hormonal changes that cause our flow also does something with out uterine and vaginal muscles to help expel or slough off the layer of tissue that is our period.
Severe pain is not normal and may be symptom of other conditions such as endometriosis, cyst, etc. Of course everyone has their different pain tolerance too. Make sure you get your yearly check up and make sure you tell your gynecologist about this pain.

The natural (unfortunately!) pains are caused by contractions in the musculature of the uterus. The contractions are caused by the release of the body's prostaglandins, which are hormones produced by the lining of the womb.
Wait till you have a smear test, oh! This feels like a period pain but 10 times worse. Bloody muscles! How hard it really is to be a woman!

I don't know why they hurt so much, but I know they can be miserable. The only thing that helps me at all is Motrin. It says to take 1 - 2 caplets, but sometimes that's not enough so I take 3.
(I'm not recommending 3. I'm not qualified to do that.)
I hope you get feeling better soon.
Hey "chilling", how old do you have to be before they get better? I'm 50 and they still hurt almost as bad as giving birth!

A lot of my friends have ones so bad that they can barely move their bodies an inch to change the TV channel. So yeah, its pretty normal to have incredibly painful ones. Not on a regular basis, but they're not uncommon

If they're that bad, tell your doctor. Try going on the Pill. I did, and now my periods are less painful and only 3 days long, it's amazing, I wish I'd done it years ago.

the reason it hurts so much is because your uterus is conyracting to get rid of it`s lining. the way the lining comes out is through the cervix which in most women is the size of a pin-hole. ie imagen trying to put jam through the eye of a needle! it needs to contract to squeeze out the blood and clots etc
thats why its so painfull x
