Knowing your IP address is like knowing your Phone Number.... if you don't answer its not dangerous. To be sure you don't answer you run a firewall which checks inbound traffic and simply doesn't answer. If you don't have a firewall your machine might reply. So RUN a FIREWALL and it wont matter if someone has your IP.

If you run peer to peer programs then your computer does answer and you need to be very aware of what is happening!

There's this possibilty that your computer can be hacked and used for illegal purposes like store encrypted files and folders on your computer that might have anti-national aims or porn from a remote location. It also can be used for phisihing online and may land you into trouble with the cyber police.
Its always recommend that you keep your firewalls on before going to the internet and also beware of sites that don't 'feel' good
Thanks,
Kakes

IP addresses are quite easy to get, particularly static ones. Use a good firewall and you should be OK!
