"Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." - George Santayana
Even if you hate it, it can still teach you something.

1) To learn from past mistakes.
2) If everyone took the time, there would be some area of history that they would like. Why do you think the history channel is so popular (although once you start reading, you find the history channel either just scratches the surface, or might even be wrong as in their presenation about the Romanov's).
3) You'll learn more about yourself and where you came from.
4) If you know something about a nation's history, you have an instant conversation starter with a person from that nation (knowing a little something about Potemkin kept me in conversation with a good looking girl from the Ukraine for over an hour).
5) History enriches your mind and helps you to become more intelligent as opposed to rotting your mind like most of the crap on TV now (damn, I think I just made myself sound old).
6) Without history, there is no now.

Hello,
" Not knowing what happen before you were born is to live forever as a child."- Cicero
I cannot help but notice the teaching of history in North American schools has gone down drastically where it is no longer compulsory in some areas. Look at many answers you get on these forums; some are very absurd, even for recent history. Ask many youngsters today who Julius Caesar, Tamerlane, Francis Drake or Pauncho Villa were and they'll ask what football team do they belong to. Lol, even talked to a grade 11 student fron British Columbia several years back who had not heard of Adolf Hitler. I sure hope he's an exception to the rule.

Some day humans just might learn a lesson or two from the mistakes of 'yesterday'!
'History' just means learning about what our descendants did. It can include ones parents, grandparents, etc....or ancient ancestors.
Sadly it isn't taught so very well in most educational systems, thus it is boring to most.
But, if one could only think of it as 'lessons of mankind' it might be a little more palatable.
'History' can also include Geography, Geology, Botany, and other sciences....for everything on this Earth is related in one way or another....

I am going to give a link to an essay on the reason just ONE portion of history is important. If this one event is so critical for us to know, think of the rest of it!
