I will now tell you the truth. First of all, Black Sabbath sucks. So does Spinal Tap. Metallica isnt good anymore since their bassist died :(. And I dont even think Led Zeppelin is metal.

I say the best metal bands in the world are:
Megadeth.
Opeth (Not well known but they are very unique and play some pretty hard stuff.)
and If you want techincal -> Necrophagist (OMG they play crazy stuff...)

I understand ppl will flame me for saying Black sabbath sucks... which they do : P

Black Sabbath. What metal is really about doomy sounding guitar, evil lyrics, thundering back beat (bass & drums). Generally considered the godfathers of metal. Influence to many metal bands out today (Metallica, Anthrax, etc) all owe a debt of grattitude to Ozzy, Iommi, Ward, Butler!!

Heaven and Hell.....Ronnie James Dio is perhaps the voice of heavy metal & arguably brought new life and legendary material to Black Sabbath after Ozzy forged ahead with a solo career

Judas Priest...since 1974 ..that's why.

Judas Priest is the very reason I picked up drums at 16. A friend of mine gave a tape of "Screaming for Vengeance" and BAM!!!! I was hooked immediately!
I started learning their solid, drum beats as fast as I could. No lie! I've been and still drumming 20 solid years...=)

late 70's- mid 80's - Judas Priest (because of the flying V guitars )

Mid 80's - mid 90's - Iron Maiden (Brucie took them to a higher level )

mid 90's - to the naughties - Metallica ( I thought they were destined for the "where are they now" section, but they proved me wrong ) Although a close second , just because I think they deserve a mention , the mighty "Crimson Glory .

now, Dragonforce. nuff said !!!!
