Yes, a few thousand did escape from France to Britain, and they became the Free French (Francaises Libres), and they were led by General Charles de Gaulle. De Gaulle and the Free French did not recognize the legitimacy of the collaborationist Vichy French government in France led by Philippe Petain under the German occupation (1940 - 1944). De Gaulle's Free French forces fought in North Africa (see Bir Hakeim), Ethiopia, Italy, and the invasion of France. On October 23rd, 1944 - De Gaulle's Free French were officially recognized as the provisional government of France.
