It's because in Chinese, the first name serves as the family name or the surname and the last name serves as the first name, so Yao's first name is Ming and his family name is Yao.

if I were to come home and walk in on that...I wonder where I could find instructions on how to gouge my own eyes out. If I couldn't bring myself to do that, I'd drive to the airport, and take the next flight to Greenland, and never look back.
