When i was on the contraceptive pill, it made my periods much lighter. But before taking anything like this, i would first have a chat with your doctor, because if your periods are unusually heavy, there could be a reason why and by sorting that out, your periods may become lighter.

DO NOT TAKE DEPO. Depo is poison to your system and I am sure you will be sorry if you do. As for lighter if your bleeding heavy there are of course medications. Naproxen is one that doctors will prescribe to help lighten the bleeding. Also, if you want to go on the pill it has shown some benefits to most women to shorten or lighten the period a woman has. Of course with any medications there are side effects. Do research before you start any. Try not to take the pill.

Mefenamic acid both helps period pain and lessens the bleeding a bit. The only other options are hormones, either the combined pill or progesterones. Progesterone in the Mirena coil is also used.

Buy a normal modern lighter, i.e a clipper or swan vesta. Take it home and decorate it with gold leaf and a bit of lace, it will resemble a cigarette lighter from the 19th Century...hence you will have made a "period lighter."
