ROFL- when I get married I will make him take my last name!!!
Submission my a**, this is a modern world. Woman take their husbands names these days because they like it better not as a sign of submission. Woman who already have their career going usually want to keep their last name for business purposes or at the very least hyphenate. Sign of property? Woman are not property...k

That's not what it is. That's not what it stands for. That's not what it symbolizes. It is a show of love for one another. A symbol of undying love, caring and affection. It is what proves that she is taken, and by one man and one only. A sign that says no other man can have her. A sign and a symbol that she is with the one she loves. If you want to call disrespectful, fine. But say it's because of 'submission'. Don't say it's because of 'property'. Because I am a living, breathing, human being with blood running through my vein's. I walk unto a man's property, I am not it.

No, I don't think it is disrespectful for a wife to keep her maiden name. There may be many reasons why she wants to keep her surname. Maybe there are no brothers in her family and her family name will be gone. Though I would want the same name as my children, so it would all depend on what the surname is.

Over here in the Middle East where I now live it is a very common practice for all Middle Eastern women, be they Muslim or Christian they keep their maiden name after marriage; the kids get their dad's first name as their middle name and his last name. I did it the American way, was going to keep my maiden name, then I thought tradition is tradition.
I gave you a star for sheer spunk.

Well, young man, you are wrong. Wanting a woman who will marry you to deny her own heritage, (i.e. her last name), is totally out of line. Wanting her to be your "property", your "slave", is disrespectful, and illegal where I come from.
Make sure you tell this to your "woman of choice" before you pop the question. That will save you the cost of an engagement ring.

I think the hyphenated version combines who she was with who she is becoming.
I chose to take my husbands last name because of traditional aspects, not because I felt I was property. And I kept it after we divorced with his permission so I would retain the same name as my children.

My name is hyphenated cause i gained my professional title when i was single. No personal reason, and it shouldn't make my husband less of a man...

The type of thinking displayed in such a question, would lead a person to believe the man in the relationship, has to have total control.
