I cannot afford a lawyer for a child support-custody hearing that is coming up this month with me and my ex boyfriend.

Do I need one??? What can I expect to happen at court? (This is the first time we are going)

I am pretty sure that my ex does not have a lawyer, either....as he is broke as a joke and has told me he has no lawyer.

It is best to never go to any kind of court without a lawyer. Even a court appointed lawyer is better than nothing, and some of them are actually good! I had a court appointed lawyer in Family Court and she did a good, above average job.

Having a lawyer is like having an auto mechanic when there's a problem with your car. You can handle simple things yourself, possibly more if you're competent, but at some point the expertise and training makes a significant difference.

If the other party does not have an attorney, then the playing field is level, and the judge will take that into account.

Basically, if you don't understand something ask the judge.
