apparently this is now standard in new machines. The washing comes out clean yet hardly any water/soap is visible. How can this be so?

i think they wash just as good as the older types because did you notice the wash time is longer and the clothes get agitated better.I have got one of these washing machines too haven't had it very long and when I seen how little water went in I didn't think it would wash the clothes very clean but it does.

Bosch are definitely advertising how little water they use and I don't see much in my Bosch machine.
Also finding that I can wash on much lower temperatures these days and washing is still coming out with a sparkle.
What I really need is a hot-fill machine - there are solar panels on the roof and we have so much free water at 60 deg just sitting in the tank not being used.

This can be solved by slackening the water feed pipe into the machine just enough to get a steady drip, always place a suitable receptacle under machine to catch spilled water which you should empty at least hourly, this increases water cosumption significantly.

The frontload washers and the topload agitatorless washers are called HE because they save water and energy.
The topload agitator washers are called non HE because they waste water and energy.
