I'm not so sure "dying in our sleep" would be free of unpleasantness or "suffering..."
Whatever you're dreaming probably gets rudely interrupted in the worst way, and who's to say you don't wake up just in time to feel the pain of your heart attack or stroke and THEN die...
I highly suspect there's no easy way out...the end of our lives does seem to have a certain amount of "for sure" suffering...
But that's why it's important to develop a good sense of humor during our lives to ease that suffering in the end a bit, and make it less harsh for our surviving loved ones...and we need to face the end with all the courage we can muster, and hopefully die with dignity and as little pain as possible...
And we need to be a loving enough person during our lives that we're surrounded by loved ones at the end...love and sense of humor are sooooooo important!!!

(especially when it comes to dyin'...)

Actually, dieing in my sleep is the last thing I had in mind. What if I get stuck in a dream and never come out? I would prefer to be fully awake and aware when I die. Actually, there is a specific way in which I would wish to die, but it would not be polite to discuss it in this forum.

Some folks are destined to suffer however, to increase our knowledge. Those who suffer, do so in the hope that a cure for their ailment will come through before they expire. Some choose to suffer simply to get every moment out of life that they can. Some merely have no choice and are subject to the inane laws that we have all agreed to live by. Some take their own lives, and some have the option of having their pain ended by a kind soul who recognizes that life in a state of agony ceases to have meaning and becomes torture. I'm afraid your premise is flawed. There are many choices depending on the society you live in, and the laws and customs you subscribe to.

~~~ Like cconsaul ,I too hope to be wide awake and fully aware when my time to die arrives. I wouldn't want to miss it for the world. lol! It would be really awesome if I knew ahead of time so I could prepare, and have my favorite music playing (Bob Marley) so I could hear it one last time. Maybe once I'm gone I'll get to hear the real deal in person,because He is already gone. As for others who have left this world aware of their suffering,I think they finally are happy to be out of pain. An ill person or a person who has been in a terrible accident experiences alot of pain while living,so I'm sure death is a relief. I know it was with my husband,I saw it on his face. He hadn't looked that peaceful in a long time and I was happy for him. I don't think anybody is "destined to suffer", it just happens because this is life and we live on Earth right now, not Heaven. So things happen and we'll never really know why.I'm sorry your mom suffered,and I'm glad she isn't anymore. We can still miss her though,which is another form of suffering we can deal with now. ~~~
Speak for yourself. I have no desire to die in my sleep, unless I can pick the time. What makes you think sufferers don't die in their sleep? When I determine that I am losing the ability to care for myself I will leave this life and the method I think I have chosen pretty well indicates that I won't be asleep.
As a philosopher. Do you believe there is an answer to every question? Or are some questions asked just to evoke thought? This question is tricky because to answer it implies you have knowledge it is impossible to really have. Some things are a consequence of the existence of sin and have no higher explanation. As is it is with the answer to this question.
as has every child that died of hunger? the news is filled of stories of cars speeding and then there is the middle east...suffering is our lot, in suffering of an old person a long drawing out death brings understanding to those that care...those that suffer only do so in that no one is there to hold them as we all die
Because hope is useless as compared to knowledge. No one ever came to knowledge in his sleep.
WHY ASK WHY?
Just enjoy life - it's short enough as it is, and we only get so many chances to do it right.
