Buddha just means that you reached enlightenment. The "fat" Buddha you are talking about is happy Buddha. The "regular" Buddha was actually a prince named Siddhartha. It's a long story, that I think most people won't care to read. Anyway, the difference is that they are two totally different people.
Opps forgot to answer the earlobes question...I actually didn't know the answer either...I forgot. Anyways I looked it up.
"And I answer it not in the simplest way, but in the way that has meaning for that culture: 'His earlobes are long because Siddhartha was born into a princely household with great wealth. In that culture, wealth would be displayed with heavy earrings, and yet at a critical moment in his young adulthood, Siddhartha forsook his wealth, shaved his head, gave away his jewels and went out into the world on a spiritual quest. The long ears are a reminder that he was once dragged down by wealth, but his earlobes are empty, because he renounced that wealth.'

Fat Buddha is a Chinese Buddha also known as Happy Buddha and is most commonly seen in the west in Chinese restaurants. I think this Buddha is also know as Maitreya, although not the same as the Buddha Maitreya considered as the 'future' Buddha.
This particular Buddha, I believe is known for good fortune and is from where the custom of rubbing his belly for luck comes.
For those unfamiliar with Buddhism, the term Buddha does not refer only to Lord Buddha, Sidharttha Gautama, but to any being who has attained full realization.
My information comes from a Chinese website I recently visited and unfortunately I do not recall the address.

That Fat Guy you see with gold taals or ingots sometimes isn't Buddha, but someone else. Another god of wealth and happiness. Japanese call him Yebisu.
Buddha is normally seen as tall and thin with a halo and his face round and healthy, and hair growing in coils, neither manly nor womanish. Strange looking, but not the fat guy.

I heard that the fat buddha is not the real one, he simply represents abundance because of his big belly. The thin one is the real one because he went through long periods of fasting. As for the earlobes I don't remember but I used to know.Lets pretend he just wore heavy earings! LOL
