I thought the book was over the top at times but nonetheless superior in every ways to Da Vinci Code.
The Anti-Matter will not do a dramatic bang but however it is nonetheless symbolic of how science can be used for evil. In fact it rung a bell of the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings.
There are quite a few things that are symbolic in the book especially the Carmenlengo. I won't tell any spoilers to those wishing to read the book but all I can say is that it seem to be inspired by the corrupt anti-popes.
But the stand out in the book was the theme of science vs religion. It is something anyone could relate to compared to the idea of Jesus having a baby.
Brown flawlessly represented both sides and not just giving a 2-D outlook. In the character of Vetra he uses her to represent those who think science and religion can work together for the greater good.
And finally there's the 4 elements. Whilst most fictions will be quick to use the elements as magic/weapons/powers, Brownie decides to use the elements ingeniously and assign them to artworks and calling cards.
Whilst we're on the subject of artworks, I especially love the brilliant use of ambigrams. No other books I've read have used it as a subplot so Brown has to be congratulated as the first.
Sadly this brilliance and originality just didn't seem to be in his 2nd Langdon book. If I do have one complaint about the book is the use of the very 2-d Hassasin.
Though I guess he was somewhat original with this classical Arabic villain as instead of being a Muslim-doting extremist he's a science-worshipping assasin. But then again there wasn't much backstory or explanation to him compared to Silas, which makes him the inferior villain.

Well, I couldn't disagree with frangipaner more.
I thought "Angels and Demons" was a far better book than "The Da Vinci Code" - better plotted and better written.
It may have something to do with the fact that I had read "The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail" so I knew exactly what was going to happen in "The Da Vinci Code", which rather destroyed any kind of suspense it may have had.

I loved Angels & Demons because of the twists and turns in the plot. However, I did not like the Da Vinci Code. I had started reading it, and it just couldn't capture my interest. Maybe it was because I had seen the movie prior to reading the book.

I absolutely agree! Loved every page. Heard a lot of people grumbling about this one being boring and hard to get into. Maybe the science bogged some folks down? I only know that Dan Brown is a genius. Like you said...science, religion, brilliant characters, locations, art......all fascinating to me.

I read a hundred pages or so on the mundane flight from Paris to Canader two years ago. And then I got home, put it down, and I've seen it since, yes, but I haven't picked it back up yet. If I did, I'd have to start over since all I remember is anti-matter and that fancy airplane-type thing Langdon flew in...
But if I find time (and it), I may pick it up again. I hear it's good.

It overshadowed Davinci Code by far. If you liked that one read Deception Code. It'll keep you on the edge.

It was alright. I liked DaVinci Code better. I did like that it had a romance in it, though.
