My hermit crab is normally very active but has recently stoppped moving. I did notice a couple of days ago that it began to hang more around the water bowl and looked like it wanted to dig, but i am not sure it is ready to molt. I noticed today that it had not moved in several hours. i picked it up and it will barely move; I thought it was dead but when i put a little piece of paper to its claw it closed its claw slightly. I put it back in the crabitat hours ago and it has not moved and I can see the legs hanging out some whereas normally they are pulled in. Is it dying or is it ready to molt? How can I tell? What do I need to do because my son will be devastated if it dies? If he is sick how do I nurse it back to health?

he is getting ready to molt it takes sometimes days with them like this and sometimes we think they are dead, just leave him be and make sure the food and water are right near him and no other hermits can get to him give him a few days for this process, leave an empty egg shell nearby they eat this and helps them quicker after molting and make sure he has a slightly bigger shell a couple of them to chose from as his new home. gl

It does sound as though your crab is ready to molt. Place him under a cocohut and leave him alone to do his thing. The only thing you can do to determine if it is something more serious and not a molt is to smell your crab. If you get a dead fishy smell then your crab is in bad shape. Molters do smell as well but not like dead fish.

Make sure you let your crab eat his exoskeleton and offer him fresh and ocean salt water and some food high in calcium.

Mash up some peas (just a couple) and mix a little of the fiberless goo in crab's water. It works for goldfish...

Sneak off to the pet store and have an extra on hand...

imo u ought to get ur hermit crab first and after approximately 3 days of seein the way it acts, then u grant it a acceptance that suits his/hers character. I easily have 2 of them and one is termed Everest after the Mountain cuz he likes to climb to the optimal peek of the super log I easily have of their habitat. The others call is Waldo named after "Wheres Waldo" character lol cuz he continuously hides and often can b stumbled on burrowed below what ever i put in their place. presently its hay. I dont persist with rules. I pimp their place out with what i stumble on around at abode (logs, plastics etc.) If i did persist with rules then it may value $ and that i've got over 30 pets that variety from the situation-loose chickens to the unique tortises which btw grrrr escaped as quickly as lower back. Ugh that dam Houdini i shall hunt him down tom. early mornin :D If u dont desire to attend to c their character u could finally end up with a acceptance thats an entire opposite of it and thats no relaxing :( call concepts in any case: Herbie, Gary, Bella, Tom Tom, Bailey, Riley, Chomper (because of the fact they have one super mandible claw) savour the the remainder of ur nite/day :)

I am so sorry this is happening to your friend. I cannot help you other than to suggest you Google hermit crabs and do some research. Crustaceans have such different systems than we do....have you changed anything in it's environment lately? Do you keep it clean? I fear for your friend's life.

I wish you good luck in your research.
