The most runs scored in a single day of a Test Match was 588 runs scored in the second day of Test Match played between England and India at Old Trafford in 1936. England was 173 runs for the loss of 2 wickets on the first day. In the second day they declared at 571 for 8 and India scored 190runs for no loss.
However, the most runs scored in a single day by a side was 509 runs scored by Sri Lanka on the second day of their first test against Bangladesh in Colombo in 2002.
