i got my baby RES from china town too. at first they don't eat but after awhile they start eating. if you are really worried i you should try to force it to eat some raw meat or raw chicken. offer it different turtle foods. my baby RES loves grapes, any green leafs and turtle pellets. for the soft shell i would put it under the sun so it get some sunlight ( dry place) they need at least 5 hr of sun light. also try to add calcium to its water or some turtle bones. also make sure the water is clean at all times and the water temperature is right for them

It sounds like your turtle has a SEVERE case of metabolic bone disease, or some equally devasting problem. MBD is caused by lack of UVB/UVA light along with poor calcium amounts in the diet. Turtles should have a basking rock where they can extend themselves out on to absorb light onto their skin, not their shell. If he won't come out of the shell, he has a serious problem. If he never seems to come out, check for noises or environment factors that might be scaring him. However, MBD to the point his shell is soft (or whatever other disease it may be) requires MEDICAL HELP, not just more light. I took on a lizard with MBD and had to give it calcium shots for three days, then a daily dose of Neocalglucon to try replenish its calcium, along with daily 'real' sunlight and a new UVB/UVA light AND a restructuring of his diet.
A soft shell is not healthy, and if the turtle isn't dead, he will be soon if you don't take it to a vet. If he lives to the vet's office, research proper diet for RES turtles, and then follow through with proper care to the best of your abilities. I shake my head you bought him without asking more questions, but I shake my finger at the people you bought him from - shame on them for putting a dollar ahead of reptile health! If you've had him less than a week or two, the MBD has been going on for quite a while before that.

The softness sounds like he needs calcium, which they cannot absorb without UV rays from the sun...
What do the markings look like? Are they a part of his coloring possibly?
What have you been trying to feed him? Try some tuna or dip the food in the juices from the can...
Are you sure his eyes are closed? Or is it possible that he has an eye infection?
I would take him to a vet ASAP...
Try visiting allturtles.com and looking through their caresheets and forum... They are very helpful and informative, and can help you with this problem better than me..
Best of luck and keep us posted!

If he was dead, he would smell very bad! And in my experience a dead turtle does tend to have it's head and legs hanging out. But,it sounds as if your turtle is VERY ill.You need to take it to a veterinarian right away,If he doesn't eat,he can't get the proper vitamins and minerals,to help him .The vet can give it injections of antibiotics and vitamins,to help him. So,I don't think it's dead, but if you don't get it to a vet,it will be.And,a vet can tell you if it IS dead or alive.

As between the solutions mentioned, putting your turtles with the aid of hibernation whilst in captivity might nicely be deadly particularly in the event that they are feeding. i might recommend you get your self a water heater and /slowly/ improve the temperature of the water, perchance as much as 50-fifty 5. Get a heat lamp going the place they bask. i might get rid of the turtle it quite is on the backside and spot if he will wake to the two being ignored in the room (in a secure moist field) or lay him in an inch of under luke heat water, not something too stunning!

I know nothing about turtles, but I'd suggest a veterinarian, or take the word of the PetSmart guy.

I'm guessing you bought no UV lights for him? this is most likely the cause, hhmhmh
DON'T LEAVE HIM OUTSIDE THE WATER IN THE SUN FOR 3 HOURS you most likely just killed him then.
Did you keep him in a tank with water, and a ledge so he can get their to dry out and get some UV lights?

Why can't people tell the difference between a dead turtle and a live one??? This is incredible!!
IF the turtle is still alive, PLEASE EUTHANIZE IT!
It is way too late for the vet.
You didn't take care of your turtle- you didn't even bother to read up on them or get help until it was dead.
My answer?
Don't get any more pets!
