Many people have wondered this, and yet, no one really knows. There are actually scientists working on answering this question, but so far, they haven't come up with an answer. the first thing they examined was "because your not in control of it, so your body isn't expecting it", turned out that wasn't really the answer. Hopefully they will have an answer for it soon.

So, if someone else's touch can tickle us, why can't we tickle ourselves? Much of the explanation for this question is still unknown, but research has shown that the brain is trained to know what to feel when a person moves or performs any function. We aren't aware of a lot of the sensations generated by our movements. For example, you probably don't pay much attention to your vocal cords when you speak. For the same reason, we can't tickle ourselves. If we grab our sides in an attempt to tickle ourselves, our brain anticipates this contact from the hands and prepares itself for it. By taking away the feeling of unease and panic, the body no longer responds the same as it would if someone else were to tickle us.

Tickling is a matter of surprise that is why most people cannot tickle any area of their body themselves. I can mildly tickle my feet and they are the most ticklish spots of my body.

Because your brain knows where you are going to touch yourself. So it sends a signals to your nerves right there and it is no surprise to your body because it already knows what you are going to do. When someone else tickles you, your brain doesn't really know how it feels so is not prepared to send those nerves signals.

because part of the tickle response is the fact that your brain doesn't know that the sensation is coming ... and try as hard as you can, you can't "out think" your own brain

...that's a great question...and something to think about and funny, too...

....maybe it is because...you don't know where they are going to tickle you and it is a surprise?...and maybe it also depends on who tries to tickle you...
