Are you talking the Roman arena? If so, think about some of the actual creatures that might have fought in the arena. Lions, leopards, bears, dogs, wolves, and maybe tigers. Then add some mythological creatures. Already you're thinking of using a miotaur. Consider in addition to the minotaur using centaurs, gargouilles (it's a type of dragon whose name appears to be the origin of gargoyle), sphinxes, amphiptères (another type of dragon), a chimera, kelpies (not something made up by Rowling), griffins, manticores, and wyverns (yet another type of dragon).

Minotaurs almost *require* a maze. Arenas/slaves makes me think of lions. What about a griffin? Excellent portrayal in the original "The Sword in the Stone".. A sphinx might also work, but they're more of the Gollum type. A hippogriff might also be worth exploring.

I hope this helps.

You should definitely have these werewolves who climb on walls and ceilings, and the hero is given only a lantern to ward off the light-fearing wolves while they attempt to run towards a slowly-sealing door on the end of the maze. If they don't make it in time, their lanterns will run out of oil and they die in there.

I think a good monster for an arena battle would be a manticore. Being part lion, part scorpion makes it a very deadly opponent.
