I like them both, and am fans of both. J.R.R. Tolkien is a classic though, and I have read and continue to read his books with great pleasure.
J.K. Rowlings I believe borrows from him, and I do love her work, but it is a fun read, and not of the same calibur as Tolkien.

I like J.R.R. Tolkien's story but just the dialouge gets me, so i will have to go with J.K. Rowlings
I know a better series by Terry Goodkind, if u put J.K. Rowling and J.R.R. Tolkiend together u could not get the detailed plot of this series (currently 10 in series [11 with little 100 page prequel] 11th coming out Novmeber 19, 2007)
First book is Called "Wizard's first Rule"

J.R.R. Tolkien is the catalyst for much of what we know today as fantasy. You have to respect that.
On the other hand J.K. Rowling has really stepped it up with amazing novels that adults and kids can enjoy. Millions of books sold. She essentially was a huge spark for young people to read again.
In the end Tolkien is the Don. You can't knock him.

Both are quite popular these days, with their works being made into movies recently. However, for me, the master story teller would be J.R.R. Tolkien. With that said, based on the average age and the mindset of fellow answerers here, I would bet JK Rowlings wins the popularity contest!
