Basially, what this means is that, everywhere in the function you see 'x' you replace it by 'a-2'

So,

f(x) = 5x² - 11
so, f(a-2) = 5(a-2)² - 11
f(a-2) = 5(a²-4a+4) - 11
f(a-2) = 5a² - 20a + 20 - 11
f(a-2) = 5a² - 20a + 9

Substitution. f(a-2) = 5(a-2)^2 - 11 = 5(a*2 -4a +4) - 11 = 5a^2 -20a +9.

f(a-2) = 5(a-2)^2-11

f(a - 2) = 5 (a - 2)² - 11
f(a - 2) = 5 (a² - 4 a + 4) - 11
f(a - 2) = 5 a² - 20 a + 9

Substitute x in the original equation with (a-2)
So, we get,

f(a-2) = [5(a-2)^2] - 11
f(a-2) = [5(a^2 -2a + 4)] - 11
f(a-2) = 5a^2 - 10a + 20 - 11
f(a-2) = 5a^2 - 10a + 9 ......... ANS

hope this helps!! :-)
