keep your mind on what you want, not what you don't want, (keep your eye on the ball). practice relaxation techniques when the pressure is not on, so you are ready when the tension is high.

In tension moments, if you feel your mind might be unbalanced, I was shown a short calming routine that always works for me.

1 - Is the situation life threatening? If not, take your time. This is always better than panic and will result in a better resolution. If the situation is serious, back away or leave the scene until you can think clearly again. Thought always comes before action. The better you can think calmly & clearly, the more effective your action will be.

2 - How did your mind become unbalanced? Was is confusion? Emotion? Or something else? If you can identify the reason for becoming unbalanced then you can begin to formulate a way to dealing with it without becoming unbalanced again.

3 - Centre your mind on your immediate physical well being. If you are feeling no pain, no undue physical stress, take 5 - 8 seconds (close your eyes, take 2 or 3 deep breaths, then open your eyes again slowly). See the reason for the tension again, perhaps from a different view. Maybe you can understand why the tension was affecting you before...

In short, take it slower, don't panic, figure your way through the moments of tension, and learn from it. In this way, you will not become stressed the same way again!
