Whether or not a hostess gets a tip depends on the restaurant's policies. Depending on what is practiced, a restaurant may pay the hostess above the minimum wage. If that is the case, the hostess probably won't get any tips. However, if the policy is for the hostess to receive less than minimum wage, their pay must be compensated in a way to meet or exceed minimum wage. In this case, a policy commonly known as "tip sharing" may be used.
Tip sharing is a practice in which a member of the staff will receive a certain percentage of the tips during the hours he or she worked, along with the tables they handled. The percentage is usually based on the position worked.

No in general. Some places make or choose to tip out the hostess because they help clean tables and set them but most do not because as it is the server is tipping out to many people that they hardly make as much anymore. the more people that work at a place the less likelyhood of the hostess getting tipped. where i work the hostess gets 10 an hour versus everyone else (server, food runner, busser, and bartender) that all get 3.13 an hour plus tips. Now the busser gets 2.2% of the servers sales (not tips) which ranges from 15 dollars to 35 dollars and they are in charge of 6 server sections so do the math, the food runner gets 1% and the bartender gets 1.1% which usually ranges 5-15 dollars. the server gets whatever the people who sit in their section feel like tipping. so while the hostess doesnt get tipped out they are the only one making decent hourly pay and dependable pay. they only have to take names and sit guests down. now if you are not just wondering but looking for a job.....curb side usually pays good hourly pay and you get the tips the customer gives you, at where i work they pay 10 an hour plus tips.....so that it the best and easiest job!

I have worked many years in restaurants from serving tables to managing. I have never know of a place that tips out hostesses until my current job. The hostesses where I work make 4.50 an hour and the servers are recquired to pay them 1% of their gross sales for their shift. The servers tip out a total of 3% all of which being divided among the bussers, bartenders, and hostesses.

the place were i work hostess get paid a little more then the servers but the servers have to tip out 3% of there total sales the tip out is then divided between the bussers, hostes, and bartenders so... all the more reason to tip your server at least 15%

It really depends on the house. The waitstaff will sometimes tip out the hostess at the end of the shift. This generally happens in larger establishments or ones with fine dining.

Yes in New York they do. It's a tip out from the servers. A small percentage though. But places like Nobu, they don't get tipped because it's a power scene place and alot of people tip the maitre'd top dollars to get in without a reservation. and the maitre'd split some of it with the rest of the host. People tip the maitre'd crazy amounts to get in. I mean like 100 to 300 easily per tip. Thats alot because most places people slide 20 to get there way through

It depends on the restaurant. I worked at a restaurant where you had to tip the bussers, the hostess and the bartenders.... It was ridiculous... I didn't mind the bussers and bartenders because they did so much, but the hostess' made double what I did hourly and I was expected to tip them... It was crazy!

Damn where do you guys live I had never worked for 2.14 to 4.00 an dollar what a joke. I've always received a pay check and only had tip out hostess when I worked for fine dining. I think it was 1.5% but I don't remember it's been awhile.
