diaphragm is for ventilation or breathing. technically respiration is a metabolic activity of the cell.. not the physical inspiration and expiration of air from the lungs.

in simple terms the diaphragm is a muscle located at the base of the thoraxic cavity. When the muscle contracts, air is drawn into the lungs.

The diaphragm is a muscle which separates the thorax from the abdomen.

It's primary function is to cause inspiration of air by contracting and flattening out - thereby expanding the thoracic cavity.
