They have different divisors. Make the divisor equal (greatest common divisor) and see which one of the numbers on top of the division line is bigger:

The Greatest Common Divisor between 7 and 8 is 56 so here we go:

5*8/56 is bigger or 4*7/56
40/56 is bigger or 28/56

40/56 is obviously bigger so 5/8 > 4/7

5 / 8 = 35 / 56
4 / 7 = 32 / 56
5 / 8 is larger.

For the next part:-
- 2 / 11 = - 18 / 99
- 1/ 9 = - 11 / 99
1 / 8 = 7 / 56
4 / 7 = 32 / 56
5 / 8 = 35 / 56

This shows that you have them in the correct order.

Your order of arrangement from the lowest to the highest value is correct.

The rule is for negative numbers, the number with a bigger absolute value is lower in value, and the reverse is true.

For positive numbers like 5/8 and 4/7, the one with the bigger absolute value is larger than the one with a smaller absolute value. Absolute value is the value of a number without considering the plus or minus sign before it.

When in doubt as to which one has the bigger values in fractional numbers, the technique is to compute their values by dividing the numerator by the denominator and then expressing the answer in decimal terms. Thus, 5/8 becomes
0.625, and 4/7translates to 0.571. Here it becomes clear that 5/8 is bigger than 4/7.

Find a common denominator of 8 and 7 (an easy one is 56) and then multiply 5 by 7 and 4 by 8. The higher one is larger.

Find a common denominator

8 * 7 = 56 so this is your common denominator

(5/8)(7/7) = 35/56
(4/7)(8/8) = 32/56

35/56 > 32/56
So 5/8 > 4/7

make the denominator same... by taking the LCM of the terms....
so, LCM = 56

(5 x 7) / (8 x 7) = 35 / 56
(4 x 8) / (7 x 8) = 32 / 56

which part is larger now is what you have to see... 35 parts is larger than 32 parts of the same amount... just a way to undestand and analyse....

so, 35/56 > 32/56
that is the same as, 5/8 > 4/7 .........

hope this helped!!! :-)

two ways:

1. divide to make decimals and compare .625 to .571

2. Convert to lowest common denominator and compare 35/56 to 32/56

Loos like 5/8 is larger

5/8 > 4/7
----------
Reason:
Multiply both sides by 56, the LCM of the denominators
35 > 32
