The larynx has multiple functions including:

Protecting the airway
Phonation and sound production

During swallowing, the larynx closes at the levels of the epiglottis and glottis. The prevents food particles from entering the air passages.

In many species, the larynx and particularly the vocal cords is the source of sound production. The vocal cords can be made to vibrate with the movement of air in and out of the airway (trachea) and this produces sound. In species where the vocal cords can be tightened or relaxed, the pitch of the sound can be varied.
