have the mechanic perform a block test on it. dye changes color if coolant contains exhaust elements, which would indicate a blown head gasket, warped cylinder head, and/or cracked block

The mechanic is correct. You have a blown head gasket. The air pressure in the coolant overflow tank is caused by engine compression pressure in normal operation. The pressurized fuel/air mixture is leaking past the cylinder head gasket into the cooling system. It will get worse and can be dangerous in some cases. Eventually your engine will fail or worse. Get it fixed.

About the only way to get air into a closed system like the radiator, which is connected to the engine's Water Jacket, is from the engine cylinders. The pistons are pumping the air thru a blown gasket OR thru a cracked block! oww.

probably a bad head gasket. when a head gasket lets go into the water passages, cylinder pressure, pressurizes the cooling system, and the coolant has to go somewhere. since the radiator cap is generally rated for about 17psi, and since cylinder pressure is much higher than that, the pressure blows the cap seal off its seat, and coolant flows out of the radiator into the catch tank.

You probably have a blown head gasket AT BEST. I hope you don't have a damaged head or block.
