The best place I've seen for identifying bugs is whatsthatbug.com. Go there and look at the pictures under "beetles" and I'll bet you can find what you slaughtered. If not, just take a picture and forward it to them and they will identify it for you. Just give them as many details as you can when you forward the picture (and be prepared when they chastise you for killing it).
