LoL, this is the cutest question that I have answered in a while. I was thinking that mermaids take the form of a traditional woman on land. So, I think that she would mate like we do.

The mermaid would slap the merman in the head with her tail when her eggs are fertile letting him know she is ready to mate. The merman has a pouch where he keeps the merbabies until they are ready to go out on their own. That is why you never see mermen....they stay home a lot.

Like the dolphins where they roll in the water, affectionally stroking one another, nudging and nuzzling, until she rolls onto her back and the merman closes with her. Naturally, since she can't breathe for long in that position, it would have to be short intense encounters, same as whales and dolphins. She would probably produce a baby in a year, same as her wild kin, too.

Well, since "she" would be like a fish in that area, she would have to lay her eggs and the "merman" would then come and cover them with sperm, I think. Not much mating involved.

As with snakes, there is a special set of scales that cover their "parts" and when aroused, the scales apart and they are able to join flesh. As also with snakes, the act of love is long, slow and lugubrious, and... she sings for her lover like a true siren as they surf the waves of pleasure!
