Well, there are ultra-mobiles (basically a really small laptop) now too, but that hasn’t really caught on. Many researchers and designers are thinking of ways to implement wearable computers. Perhaps you can talk (like Vista) to it to perform various functions and have a “sleeve display” or pull-out rolled-up display with the advent of flexible OLED screens. They are better and thinner than LCD’s and really tough. You can step on it and throw these screens around too. Many companies, especially the US Defense industry are investing billions in it. Think of “active camouflage” and eye/helmet displays for soldiers. Microsoft (Surface) as well as others are also researching multi-touch, so maybe you can have a keyboard “displayed” on your forearm as well as other “virtual buttons” on the fly. The idea is also that you can use “natural hand gestures” in order to perform commands.
