You don't need a pad until you actually start your period. However, if your period is not real predictable, and you are not sure exactly when it will start, you may want to use panty liners the few day before you expect it to prevent embarrassing situations.

For the first couple years, your period might not be regular, and you might not always get clear warning before it hits. More than once in Junior High and High School, I saw my female classmates get caught and have to run home to change.
Until you are more sure of your cycle, it wouldn't hurt to wear a minipad for a couple days before you expect your period. Also keep a couple pads in your pocket or purse to use at the first twinges. It might save you some embarrassing moments. My wife still always carries a couple since her periods never really did settle into a predicable pattern...

When you're expecting your period, you won't need to wear a pad until that day, or possibly the night before if you think you might start during the night. You might also consider tampons, but be sure to change them regularly.

If you think you are getting your period, put a pad in the day or two before, just in case it starts early.

Just once it starts. YOu might want to wear a panty liner when you are expecting it so that you won't have any "accidents" that would be embarrassing! Just be sure to have one with you when its close to time.
