What box? :)
To "think outside the box" is to think in a creative, unorthodox, non-stereotypical way. Albert Einstein got his Nobel Prize partly because of his habitual tendency to look at problems and to solve them in unorthodox ways. This is also true of many of history's other great thinkers - they are great precisely because they do NOT think alike.
Quite often, I have found those people fond of using this cliché not only tend to be the least willing and able to think "outside the box" themselves but are least comfortable with and least tolerant of the quirks and idiosyncrasies of those who frequently do.
