Yes there is cheering in the UK, and some of it is competitive. The Ascension Eagles and ScotCheer came to Worlds in the USA this year and I believe previous years as well.

Here are some cheer association links you can check out:

I found out on Friday that the cheerleaders for our American Football team at University are the National Champions. Because this is the only thing that Southampton Solent University has ever achieved, we hold cheerleading in high regard! I think that all men in the UK are of the opinion that cheerleaders are one of the top three greatest American inventions, along with condensed soup and deep-pan pizza.

Its not really something we do in England. Im not sure about state schools but the school i went to did offer cheerleading as an after school activity (it was a private boarding school you see). But it wasn't taken seriously. Try looking it up on the internet. Maybe search for cheerleading in UK. Its bound to come up with something.

Occasionally they are at Soccer games here and are met with a wave of apathy.
I think we're still baffled over here about Cheerleading.
What does it achieve?
Why do we need help cheering?

not in my area. the nearest thing we have to it is majorette troupes. they compete all over the UK. they learn and practise in their own clubs and not at the secondary (comprehensive) schools. our troupes take part in our annual carnival (Bridgwater), which is the biggest illuminated carnival in Europe.
